Humboldt penguin
Classification | Habitat | Diet |
Sphenisciformes > Spheniscidae | Shoreline | Fish, squid, and shellfish |
When we think of penguins, we think of cold regions,
but the Humboldt penguin comes from the warmer coasts of Peru
and Chile in South America, where the "Humboldt" current flows.
They are small compared to other penguins and love to swim.
Their feathers are denser than other birds to keep them dry,
and they have a stiff top layer to keep them waterproof
and a soft bottom layer to keep them warm.
They also have oil glands under their tails,
and they use their beaks to apply oil
to their bodies to keep their fur dry.
Safety Precautions
1. Do not place food, cotton candy, or other objects in the tank.
