Guinea Pig
Classification | Habitat | Diet |
Rodentia > Caviidae | All of South America | Fruits, vegetables, etc. |
When they were first sold in England,
they were traded for "a guinea," a unit of money.
They were named "guinea pigs" because their cries sounded like "pigs".
With four front toes and three back toes,
they are a member of the Cervidae family,
related to capybaras and maras.
Even the smallest sounds can startle them,
so be sure to speak quietly in front of your guinea pig!
